A cloud ceiling light is a type of luminaire suspended from the ceiling to produce a diffused light effect. It is generally used in bedrooms, living rooms or other rooms where people spend a lot of time. But how do you install it effectively? That’s the question.
Precautions to take before making an electrical connection
Whatever type of connection you’re planning, it’s important to have a basic understanding of how an electrical circuit works. This way, you won’t risk electrocution or burns.
Installing a cloud ceiling light is not very different from installing any other type of luminaire. But before you buy one, it’s important to know the electrical requirements for installation and the type of lighting best suited to the room.
The first thing you need to know about the installation process is that a cloud ceiling light requires a dedicated circuit breaker or fuse. Make sure it’s installed in a well-cleared area. Your installation should therefore be placed in the center of the ceiling. And the most important thing of all is to remember to switch off the power supply before carrying out any work.
The right size and type of cloud ceiling light for your space
In fact, it’s not enough just to pick up a cloud-type ceiling light at random and install it. If you’ve decided to install a cloud ceiling light, it’s precisely to be more decorative. In this case, the choice of size and type will be of great importance.
Your choice should depend on the size of the room. Your ceiling light should be neither too small nor too large. There’s no luxury in installing a ceiling light almost the size of the ceiling – it won’t be very practical. A small ceiling light may also not be enough to light the room properly.
You also need to consider the purpose of the lighting. Is this installation intended for use as a main light or as a nightlight in a bedroom? You won’ t need a high-intensity lamp if this is the case. Fortunately, with LED bulbs, the choice can be diversified according to need.
What you need to connect a cloud ceiling light efficiently
It’s always better to work well-equipped and in good condition. To do this, you’ll need to assemble the following equipment:
- a stepladder,
- a drill,
- a screwdriver,
- a pencil,
- a tape measure,
- cutting pliers,
- a wire stripper.
A cloud ceiling light is usually suspended from the ceiling. In this case, you’ll need screws and dowels. Don’t forget to buy a drill bit with the same diameter as the dowel.
The technique used to install a cloud ceiling light
Installing a cloud ceiling light won’t be difficult for you if you’re used to this type of work. Put on your gloves and proceed step by step. If it’s a new build, the electrical conduit will still be blank and you’ll have to do a complete electrical installation. To do this, first connect the three connection points with an electrical wire. The first, from the source to the circuit-breaker.
Then from the latter to the switch and from the switch to the ceiling light. If you use LED technology as a device, it comes with a voltage transformer. You can install it at the duct outlet, just below the ceiling. Especially as a cloud ceiling light generally works with LED lamps.
The next step is to install the fastening system. Mark the anchor points with a pencil. Then drill the holes and insert the dowels. Screw in the pin or hook to immobilize the body of the ankle. There are two ways to install the luminaire. If you’re dealing with an old electrical installation, you’ll need to use a rope to suspend the LED ceiling light from the hook.
So you can easily connect the wires using a fast conductor or a domino. On the other hand, the job will be easier for newer installations. New buildings are often fitted with a DCL (light connection device) box consisting of a socket and a hook. When you see the device, you’ll understand the next step.
Once the wires are connected and all the devices are in place, you can restart the power and run the test. It’s clear that you know what you’re getting into, and this guide will only serve to support and guide you on certain points.
